Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl - Times of India Review

Times of India
Nikhat Kazmi
Rating – 3/5

Story: Ricky Bahl ( Ranveer Singh), a young conman makes his monies by duping pretty young things -- Parineeti Chopra, Dipannita Sharma, Aditi Sharma -- with impunity. Until, the trio decide to take revenge by pitting a con girl -- Anushka Sharma -- against him. Is it checkmate time or is it time for redemption?

Movie Review: Maneesh Sharma struck the marquee with the offbeat Band Baaja Baraat. Indeed, a yardstick that would be hard to measure up to. And yes, his second film doesn't really match the zing and the verve of the first one.

Firstly, there is no humour, no earthy flavour (remember the vows on the bread pakora), no tingling chemistry between the lead pair -- everything which made the first film such a winner. More importantly, Anushka has a role only post-interval and the first half is devoted to his exploits with the other three girls. He dupes Parineeti and Aditi by pretending he's in love with them, Dipannita by selling her a fake Hussain painting. And then tries to con Anushka by selling her useless land at an exorbitant price. But somewhere down the singing and dancing, the duo steal a kiss and seal a new relationship: Voila! it's love at first kiss. Unconvincing, isn't it?

What does work in favour of the film are its performances and its non-hysterical tenor. The girls are a spirited lot and Ranveer is, well Ranveer: your average Joe kind of hero who looks convincing enough as Sunny, Deven, Iqbal, Ricky, his sundry avatars. Music by Salim Sulaiman is ordinary. A word about Parineeti Chopra: cute.

'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' Review - CNN IBN

'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' is watchable

Rating: 3/5

As Dimple Chaddha, the motor-mouthed spoilt-little-rich-brat who’s lattoo over her gym-trainer boyfriend, newcomer Parineeti Chopra steals 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' from under the nose of its leads. Whether she’s barging into her father’s office, demanding that he help solve her boyfriend’s property dispute, or drooling over the sight of the man who duped her of her affection and her money, she’s the most charming thing about this inconsistent film.

Dimple from Dilli, along with Raina from Mumbai (Dipannita Sharma), and Saira from Lucknow (Aditi Sharma) – discover they’ve each been swindled by the same deceitful charmer (Ranveer Singh). Now the trio put their heads together, and come up with a plan to get revenge on him – they hire a woman (Anushka Sharma) to con the conman.

The film’s first half hour or so plays out breezily, where everything from Habib Faisal’s delightful dialogues to Ranveer Singh’s performance as an earnest, middle-class Dilliwala hits the right note. The Mumbai chapter is engaging too, where Ranveer assumes the identity of an art exhibitor, but by the time we reach the Lucknow portions where he pretends to be a trader of zardozi designs, the screenplay has slipped into a predictable, episodic routine.

'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' nosedives further post-intermission because of script holes the size of craters. The trio of women track down our hero way too conveniently, and you can’t help but question how a seasoned conman could so easily be charmed into parting with his cash. Doesn’t help either that the narrative is interrupted far too often with unnecessary songs.

Director Maneesh Sharma grounds his characters in reality, but unlike last year’s charming Band Baaja Baaraat, this time he’s saddled with a clunky script. Good for him, he’s got actors he can count on. Anushka Sharma is in fine form as the pushy salesgirl who’s hired for this improbable mission, but the script asks so little of her. Ranveer Singh is competent and gets some lovely moments to shine – watch how he virtually casts a spell on a girlfriend’s parents when he carries her home in the wee hours of the morning, promising them he’ll always safeguard her dignity – but after a crackling debut as a quirky unconventional lead last year, with this film he’s struggling to fit into the traditional definition of a star. The film belongs to its three supporting actresses, and particularly to Parineeti Chopra who injects a huge dollop of zing into what might have otherwise been a glossy failure.

I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for director Maneesh Sharma’s 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl'. It’s an easily watchable film with much to smile about. Pity it could’ve been so much more fun.

Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl - EveryMedia Review

Story: Ricky Bahl ( Ranveer Singh), is a young and charming conman who dupes girls for a living. Three of those coned include Dimple (Parineeti Chopra), Raina (Dipannita Sharma) and Saira (Aditi Sharma). The trio decide to take revenge and hire Ishika Desai (Anushka Sharma) to carry out their plan. So is it time for redemption or checkmate?

Review: Maneesh Sharma hit the jackpot with Band Baaja Baarat. The film did exceptionally well raising the bar for both Maneesh and the cast (which is almost the same) in Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl. Luckily, Maneesh’s second film not only manages to, but rather surpasses the verve, zing and presence of its predecessor.

Ranveer probably deserves the most claps for an extremely convincing performance as Sunny, Deven, Iqbal and finally Ricky. He plays every role with a zest that is clearly visible on the big screen. He comes across as classy and entertaining.

The surprise element of the film is the three girls who have done a wonderful job in depicting their character. Parineeti Chopra, especially stands out, with her impeccable comic timing. Dipannita is convincing in her role of a poised corporate woman but may not have done enough to mark her comeback. Aditi Sharma plays her character well and is quite impressive.

Anushka Sharma looks superb throughout the movie, though the same cannot be said of her acting. Her performance in the movie is at best, average.

The first half of the movie is fast paced and exciting. The second half becomes a little slow in bits and parts but the script, the dialogues and the music are good enough a disguise to keep you from noticing the lag.

The spirited performance of the girls, the foot-thumping music and Ranveer’s convincing acting warrants a 3.5 star rating for Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl.

Taran Adarsh - Review of Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl

A Yash Raj film is interminably special for a movie enthusiast. Right from good looking stars styled most gorgeously, a fine plot, harmonious/foot tapping music, visually dazzling locales, loads of entertainment… it has it all, packaged well to cater to the desi sensibilities. The expectations, therefore, soar upwards when the triumphant team of BAND BAAJA BAARAAT bracket together for an altogether new motion picture -- LADIES VS RICKY BAHL. The query uppermost on everyone's minds is, will this prized team dish up a far superior and an enhanced entertainer for its patrons this time as well?

BAND BAAJA BAARAAT was an underdog with zilch expectations attached to it. It was the dark horse of 2010. But this time, there is hope, anticipation and of course, humungous expectations.

Okay, so before we begin to 'dissect' LADIES VS RICKY BAHL, let's clear a few misconceptions. The rumor goes that LADIES VS RICKY BAHL seeks inspiration from JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE [2006; Jesse Metcalfe]. Incidentally, the same was said about Yash Raj's youth-centric banner, Y-Films' first venture LUV KA THE END. There's talk that LADIES VS RICKY BAHL also borrows from another movie, SPREAD [2009; Ashton Kutcher] and also from Jeffrey Archer's novel 'Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less'. In the existing circumstances, making a bare-faced rip off would be blasphemous [read copyright issues]. However, I'd like to add, LADIES VS RICKY BAHL takes the same route as Yash Raj's earlier success BUNTY AUR BABLI. Actually, there's no commonality between BUNTY AUR BABLI and LADIES VS RICKY BAHL, except that both have the con angle as the wallpaper. But comparisons apart, it's a novel, contemporary tale [story: Aditya Chopra].

Dimple [Parineeti Chopra], a brash Delhi girl falls in love with Sunny, a fitness trainer. Raina [Dipannita Sharma], an independent and successful corporate woman in Mumbai, does business with an art dealer Deven. Saira [Aditi Sharma], a hard working widow in Lucknow, makes a new friend, the shy Iqbal. Three different girls who get taken for a ride by three different men.

The problem is, it is actually one man -- Ricky Bahl [Ranveer Singh], a suave and charming con-man, who revels in the game and is only chasing money.

A chance encounter brings these three women together, who vow to track down Ricky Bahl and get their money back. The next step is the actual plan. Enter Ishika [Anushka Sharma], a young and ambitious girl. The game is set in Goa…

If the promos give an indication that it's just another con flick or an extension of BAND BAAJA BAARAAT, you're in for a bolt from the blue. It's not! What's common is that LADIES VS RICKY BAHL also has ingeniously written characters and some truly engaging moments. While the first story [involving Parineeti] stands out, the second story [Dipannita] is strictly okay, while the third [Aditi] is not as convincing.

LADIES VS RICKY BAHL is a film of today and the women here are not abla naaris who will sit back and weep, but seek vengeance or at least get even with the offender. However, the screenplay [Devika Bhagat] isn't able to tap the potential that the plot provides. That's because the ploys that Anushka and her gang of girls employ to get even with Ranveer come across as preposterous and outlandish at times. Because the tricks played by the girls are unreal than sensible, even the youngsters may not really enjoy the drama in its entirety. Also, the film dips in the post-interval portions and tends to get sluggish as well. Fortunately, the director ensures that the film gets back on track and rounds off with a pounding culmination.

Director Maneesh Sharma has handled a number of sequences expertly. The start [the Delhi episode] is most enjoyable and the concluding portions are equally captivating. It's the in between that vacillates between ordinary and absorbing. Coming from Maneesh Sharma, the director of one of the best films of 2010, one expected a lot more meat from the proceedings. Habib Faisal's dialogue are incredibly witty, with the humor delicately woven in the one-liners. Music composers Salim-Sulaiman and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya join hands to create high-octane, full-of-energy tracks. 'Aadat Se Majboor' and 'Jazba' are vibrant, while 'Thug Le', during the end credits, stands out for its choreography. Aseem Mishra's cinematography is top notch.

LADIES VS RICKY BAHL projects Anushka in immaculate light, bestowing her the opportunity to ascertain yet another facet of her persona, which was hitherto unidentified by spectators. Exuding solid screen presence, Anushka wows you with her natural elucidation of the character. Ranveer is the scene stealer here. He's charismatic, spontaneous and glides into his character with amazing ease. He, most definitely, has the aptitude to go places if he chooses the right films and makes the accurate career moves.

Parineeti Chopra springs a pleasant surprise. She has wonderful screen presence and acts freely. In fact, the viewers would take to her character instantly. Dipannita Sharma carries off her part with poise and grace, while Aditi Sharma is subdued, but natural to the core. The actor enacting the role of Parineeti's father is first-rate.

On the whole, LADIES VS RICKY BAHL is, at best, a decent fare, which appeals in parts. The film starts well, even ends well. It's the in between that's plain ordinary. One definitely expected more from the director of the immensely likeable BAND BAAJA BAARAAT. Ideally, the film merits a two-and-a-half star rating, but that extra half star is for Ranveer and Anushka, who steal your heart with truly striking performances.

Samay Live Review - A must watch romantic comedy!

Samay Live Review - A must watch romantic comedy!

The pair of 'Band Bajaa Baraat'-- Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma-- once again back to the silver screens in the movie 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl', which hit the theaters across the globe this Friday.

This is the second romantic comedy for Ranveer and Anushka after the success of BBB.

The movie 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl' is directed by Maneesh Sharma and produced by Yash Chopra. Priyanka CHopra's cousin Parineeti Chopra is also making her debut in Bollywood with this movie.

The movie Ladies vs Ricky Bahl is supposedly based on Hollywood's 2006 hit ‘John Tucker Must Die’.

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl movie review:

In the movie, Ranveer has been playing the lead character of Ricky Bahl, who is a handsome and dashing con-man. In one words, Ricky is perfect Casanova, who targets reach women and woo them with his charming personality. And at the end, all the women are left with broken hearts and empty bank accounts.

Ricky Bahl cheats several women to make quick money until he meets his female counter part Ishika Desai (Anushka Sharma). Ishika is well aware of Ricky's tactics to dupe beautiful women. She plots to dupe Ricky on the same lines. The movie is the story of a con-man dupes another.

All the drama runs superbly on hilarious script. In one words you must enjoy this weekend with 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl'. The music of the film is also topping the chart busters.

Review by NDTV Movies On Ladies vs Ricky Bahl

I started off the quick review by saying that Ranveer as Ricky Bahl would want to do a "Kola-VerU" - smash a few boundaries and bowl the maidens over.

Exactly an hour into the movie, it looked like he was nearly there. As abs-flashing, smooth-talking con-man Ricky Bahl, the ladies can’t resist him. As Parineeti Chopra’s Dimple Chaddha, says, 'Yeh handsome lagna kab band karega?'

Never really, because the Band Baaja Baaraat team and director Maneesh Sharma wants to revive Ranveer's crazy energy. So they give him plenty of moments to show off his perfectly-toned abs (well-oiled and in Goa for good measure) as the ladies he has recently conned – Parineeti Chopra, Dipannita Sharma and Aditi Sharma – stake him out for revenge.

Then the predictable story line hits, with Anushka Sharma thrown in woman who can counter Ricky with a con of her own.

By now you may have guessed, how the film is likely to end, but I’ll tell you why you should still watch it.

Parineeti Chopra scores as brash nouveau riche Delhi girl Dimple Chaddha. The endearing dialogues are all here (like the film begins with her trying to adjust a choli to show cleavage-shevage).

Dipannita Sharma as Raina Parulekar and Aditi Sharma as Saira Rashid are believable.

Anushka Sharma as the ambitious salesgirl Ishika Desai is believable but not endearing – you would like her black bikini scene.

Ranveer Singh walks away the hero from the film. Super energy and after Parineeti, good dialogues which make him not a seminal con-man by any standards, but an enjoyable one.

The whistles were all for him and Parineeti.

The film loses out on the great chemistry we saw between him and Anushka in Band Baaja Baaraat, especially towards the end.

I’ll go with 2.5 stars for Ladies vs Ricky Bahl - 1 Ranveer, 1 for Parineeti for her debut film and .5 for the entertainment, especially in the first half.  Piyali Dasgupta, Editorial Head -Entertainment and Movies, NDTV Convergence

Check What Zeenews Bureau Has To Say About Ladies Vs  Ricky Bahl

The rocking ‘Band, Bajaa, Baraat’ jodi is back to entertain you, in theatres today!
Chirpy and jumpy twosome, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma duo strike back with their second rom-com ‘ Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’ this Friday.

The film also marks the debut for actress Priyanka Chopra’s cousing Parineeti. It is supposed to be based on the 2006 Hollywood hit ‘John Tucker Must Die’.

In the film, Ranveer plays the lead character of Ricky Bahl who is a con man of the perfectionist sorts. He is a charmer by nature and a smooth operator who can swipe women of their feet with his fine ways.

He woos the rich and the famous women and then all he leaves behind are broken hearts and debts in their credits. Before they realize what they got into, he is out and on his next target.

His basic idea is to make quick money while woman get fooled with his charm and the honed Casanova attributes come to his added advantage at such pursuits.

The films plot revolves around Rick Bahl’s umpteen rendenvezous with the woman he cheats, uses and disposes until he meets his female equivalent Anushka Sharma a.k.a Ishika Desai.

She is well aware of his antics for she poses the same too. Now, how the drama unfolds on one con-man laying the trap for the other con-man is what you need to see and find out.

This hilariously fast paced romantic comedy, is a great catch this weekend. The music is amazing in the film, coming from the YRF camps most trusted music duo Salim-Suleiman.

A good option to get entertained this weekend and reconnect with the BBB jodi for some laughter and foot stomping again!

Rating: Three stars for this one!
