On Gunday

Dear Friends…

Several of our Bangladeshi brethren have reached out to us with their concerns on the way the story has been portrayed and we would like to apologise if any disrespect or hurt has been caused to them. However, this was and is meant to be a fictional work and does not in any way project or disrespect any particular segment of society or persons or a nation.

The birth of a country is always steeped in the sacrifices made by its freedom fighters and martyrs and this can never be forgotten. And so was the case with Bangladesh and its people who paid a huge price to attain this freedom. The history of the sub-continent reflects this and acknowledges the struggle of the people of Bangladesh.

However, GUNDAY was not meant to in any way slight the sacrifices made or to recount the history of the creation of a new nation but several families did unfortunately get displaced as a consequence. The film addresses one such Indian family’s plight during these troubled times. The two orphans were forced to flee because of circumstances completely out of their control. And what ensued thereafter left them with very little choice but to take on the life that they did, one of desperate yet fun-loving renegades. This was largely a consequence of a prevailing system, which did not allow them to lead a normal life and be accepted in society. They were labelled as refugees and stigmatised.

If this fictitious story and its telling have in any way upset the sentiments of anybody, we would like to clarify that it was totally inadvertent and it is sincerely further regretted.

Warm regards,

YRF  Team

  1. Well said! The feeling of bein displaced, unwanted and constant identity search - these factors did truly exist. The emotions were very well portrayed in the film. Its good to see that GUNDAY touched on that emotion.

    Regards.

  2. Exactly ... I also protest as an Bangladeshi ... If the same case happened to India, would they consider this & leave it ???? No , its making any kind of sense by taking the full credit about the war in 1971 Between Bangladesh & Pakistan .. Looks like the producer & director Knows nothing about the history ... which is

    - India was one of the 1st country that agreed about the freedom of Bangladesh(Just agreed not any kinda help)

    - The freedom fight stayed from 26th March'71 to 16th Dec'71 . & India start helping by their force on 4th Dec. So. what about the 3 Million Martyrs who gave their lives about our country then ??? Just cant tolerate it ..

  6. As a Bangladeshi I cannot accept your such kind of silly apology. The story has been told at the beginning of Gunday about the Liberation War of Bangladesh is lie and nonsense. You have to erase that part from the movie and apologize for that mistake with press note. Otherwise we will take further steps... Thank you.

  7. It's not a fiction ! It was our liberation war . how can we forgot ! we just can't take this anyway . You people have to say sorry officially . Not because we asked , but because you people don't have any right to trying to making fun of our great liberation war by saying " Fiction " .

We won 1971 because we deserve to be won . You people helped us but that doesn't mean it was yours war !! It was ours & it will be ours . Better you apologize for this nonsense & make yourself Proud .

Hope you people have the courage to tell the truth .

  10. Look at your imdb rating, it will become the worst movie of bollywood as far as the imdb ranking concern.. we will remove our 1 star feedback if you erase that part and apologize for this more officially.. otherwise we will not stop!

  11. What a pointless apology which literally does not have any meaning or dignity!!
Sorry is means "What you did is completely wrong, & you realize my mistake". But what you just said is "I did no wrong. If you feel bad about that then I'm sorry"!!!

    Foolish post...

By the way I was thinking about filming a fiction movie where the story will be about how ****** the YRF team is .. Which has nothing to do with the real YRF team.

What do you say? I hope you do not mind.

  15. You made a "Fiction Movie" which starts with stating false info about an Independent Country!!!!!! Do you know what it is mean? What a mean logic it is! Birth of a country is never a fiction. It is reality. And your film started with false claim and misinterpretation of history.

Yash Raj Film must have to pray official apologye to Bangladesh & people of Bangladesh regarding this issue.

  16. Bangladeshis are very polite indeed as they are not reacting how they should after this kind of apology statement!!!!fictitious story?and your project didnt want to disrespect anyone?really??and you don't have to make a apology just becoz we demand it.you should apologize because you do know what you have done here?right? didnt watch the movie but i don't think i will watch yrf movies ever again let alone this one.

  17. How do you even say its a fiction!!! strange!!!! If it's fiction then you should have make it as fiction. Why on the earth you had to bring our most glorious part of history in fiction? Do you people really think we the Bangladeshis will accept such lame note on blogsopt as apology? Sorry Sire you are dead wrong. You should have done you home work. We fought a trained military in 1971 with our students, farmers, doctors, engineers, teachers and many other professionals. We are not in those who easily back down. You should not have awaken the sleeping tiger. Believe me your movies will be now dead in my COUNTRY. Make things right before its too late. Frankly speaking I personally am working on ways to sue you in your courts and our courts too.

  18. Thanks for your apology. But do you think it's enough? As Indians how would you feel if your history gets distorted? Explanations and Excuses can not compensate such shameful act. You can not write fictions on a real history of blood and sacrifices. A film spreads message to the mass people which eventually gets archived too. It's a pity that Indians are being misinformed through your film about the most significant history of Bangladesh. We request you to remove/edit at least the misleading part of the movie (especially at the beginning). Otherwise there's no point of apology since your movie will keep assaulting the glory of Bangladesh everyday among billions of people.

  19. simply Its not enough. sensor the film and the release it again. Its question of the birth history of a country.

  30. this kind of silly apology is not accepted. we want a press release and also remove the part that creates this anomaly.

  31. It is quite appreciable that the “influential” YRF chose to issue an apology instead of reaching out to the government of Bangladesh to take action against those protested its gross and deliberate mutilation of history, which probably the Bangladesh government would have complied with.

If there’s a general understanding that a fictitious proponent of an artistic creation, no matter what historic or socio-political dimension that has, is indeed needed to enrich or construct the story of that creation, to my view that sort of fiction can be excused and considered “just a fiction”. But it seems any artistic motivation or creative necessity is completely unfounded in the way the history of Bangladesh’s birth has been mutilated in your film.

The completely unnecessary and such deliberate misnomer of a very significant historic event of this whole region only marks the creator’s utmost ignorance of another country’s national sentiments and feelings. Commercial, political or artistic whichever way it has been – it has been a despicable ignorance by the creators.

In the context off course, such silly, inarticulate and ignorant apology cannot be accepted by any true Bangladeshi.

  38. Dear YRF Team, Please note that whenever you are quoting anything from the history then you can not mislead info...and can not mention that it is "fictitious story". Story of liberation war is not something so cheap..

    ReplyDelete
  39. why the hell did you do thet.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You are only sorry IF it offended someone. Well, guess what? You offended the memories of 3 million Freedom Fighters who perished in 1971, fighting against the colonialism of Pakistan. It wasn't India's war. It was our war of independence. The only time Indian government stepped in is when PM Gandhi realized that the wave of independence is flowing across the border into West Bengal, Assam and other border states of Bangladesh. By then, millions of died and more have been affected by war.

You know nothing about the refugees and their stigma. My mother was in that refugee camp with her newborn, while my father had to go back and fight for his country. Your depiction of the events of 1971 is not just ridiculous and humiliating, but also attempts to revise history. Try making an untrue, watered-down film about the Jewish holocaust, or the Rwanda genocides. See how that works out for you in the international community.

So, please spare us the pseudo-artistic attempts. Stick to making cheap, titillating, objectifying nonsense that you call "entertainment". Leave the history to those who have lived through it.

  42. A simple SORRY is not always enough! For the sake of argument lets agree that it was an unintentional mistake. But the narration you made at the first scenes, how can they be "FICTIONS" So you are trying to say the birth of bangladesh was a fiction?
Shame on you Yash Raj films, to hide one mistake now you are again insulting our history.
Sorry wont help, correct the narration if possible or else take down the movie from theaters. otherwise history would never forgive you people!
And please put up this apology in your facebook page and website if you are somuch guilty, anybody hardly visits your blog!
