Taran Adarsh Reviews Jab Tak Hai Jaan - Bollywood Hungama

Ratings: 4/5

After a wait of eight long years, the master storyteller, the most admired and revered director of our times, Yash Chopra, returns with his new motion picture. Regrettably, JAB TAK HAI JAAN happens to be the last film of one of the greatest raconteurs of our times...

Yash Chopra is synonymous with love and romance and also spellbinding drama and heartrending emotions. Is synonymous with harmonious music and exquisite poetry and also snow-capped mountains and mustard fields. Is synonymous with waterfalls and rains and also Switzerland and Punjab. And so much more... JAB TAK HAI JAAN encompasses everything that one has come to expect from a Yash Chopra movie. This time, it's a brand new setting, but the journey remains the same as his previous love stories -- just as the lead man and his lady love sprint towards each other from opposite directions, to cuddle each other lovingly, you're told that the romantic pathway is crammed with thorns and spikes [a quick clarification: all this talk of JAB TAK HAI JAAN being a present-day avatar of Yash Chopra's DAAG is absolutely unfounded].

For the hardcore romantics, this one's a treat. But those who *don't* swear by love stories, I am certain, will be able to connect with this film, since the twists and twirls in the screenplay are sure to allure those yearning for something captivatingly distinctive.

JAB TAK HAI JAAN is a poignant voyage of three characters. Thankfully, not once does the script or the writers [Aditya Chopra and Devika Bhagat] permit any penetration of superfluous or redundant characters or sub-plots that would've only led to puzzlement. Every episode transpires for a persuasive reason. Besides, the drama is absolutely intriguing, with an undercurrent of emotions running through the length and breadth of the film, thereby adding intensity to this passionate love story.

JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not your typical love story. It has the old-world charm written all over it, with twists and turns plenty. It would be a disservice if one were to reveal the journey of the three principal characters -- Samar, Meera and Akira -- since the plot changes from conventional to unconventional in its second hour.

JAB TAK HAI JAAN is attention-grabbing from inception till conclusion. The drama only soars higher and the complex love story gets more and more gripping as the conflict between the characters come to the fore. Mind you, JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not the usual 'love triangle', with two women fighting for the same guy. Nor can you compare it with any Yash Chopra film of yore either.

Yash Chopra's brilliancy and vividness is apparent in a number of sequences. And it echoes throughout the film. The poignant moments keep you on the periphery, while the culmination to the narrative may meet with extreme reactions. However, I strongly feel, the conclusion is most befitting for a film that doesn't take the beaten to death pathway. The only hiccup is that it gets too slow-paced at times. Also, the screenplay could've been tighter at places. A few sequences in the post-interval portions could've been spruced up for a stronger impact.

When Yash Chopra, A.R. Rahman and Gulzar join hands for a film project, the expectations are gargantuan. Its music has to meet the lofty expectations. Chopra Sr.'s music has had an eternal impact, but the songs here aren't of that towering calibre that you would anticipate from a Yash Chopra movie. Yet, the melodies that merit a mention are 'Challa', 'Saans' and 'Jiya Re'. While on music, the music piece and its choreography in the first hour deserve brownie points.

The DoP [Anil Mehta] and the production designer give the film a radiant look that befits a classic. The cinematography is surreal, grandiose and simply overwhelming. The vibrant frames add to the magnificence of this already spectacular looking film. The costume designers too come up with a wardrobe that's brimming with stunning outfits.

Event films such as JAB TAK HAI JAAN are, generally, embellished with seasoned actors. That's one of the fundamental reasons why these films appear so tempting. In addition, assembling such accomplished names [in lead roles as also supporting characters] is a rarity and there's a strong possibility that one may not see them sharing screen space ever again.

One can't imagine anyone else but Shah Rukh in the role of Samar. An individual with an emotional baggage. Although Shah Rukh has been an integral part of several romantic movies, he enacts it resplendently in JAB TAK HAI JAAN, brushing off any condemnation that he may have encountered for replicating himself in movies of parallel genre. The role gives the actor abundant opportunity to exhibit his talent and I must add, Shah Rukh transforms himself into the complex character with dexterity.

Katrina is the classic Yash Chopra heroine. An enigmatic beauty, who doubles up as a seductress [watch her in the 'Saans' track or the music piece]. She looks ethereal and enacts her part with elegance and restraint. As a matter of fact, she glides into her part with effortlessness and acts out some of the difficult moments with flourish. In view of the fact that a major portion of the story focuses on SRK and Katrina, one might assume that Anushka's role is more of a supporting one, but that's entirely fallacious. She's an integral part of this story and it must be said that she walks away with some of the best scenes and lines in the movie. Her performance is full of grit.

Rishi and Neetu Kapoor are endearing in a cameo. Anupam Kher, also in a cameo, pitches in a neat performance as Katrina's father. Sarika is first-rate in a pivotal part.

On the whole, JAB TAK HAI JAAN resonates an oft-repeated fact: Love stories will come and go. But no one will make them like Yash Chopra. Just don't miss this heartwarming love story!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan - Vintage Yash Chopra film that proves cinema is worth loving; Filmfare

Review: Jab Tak Hai Jaan Is A Winner

    Written By Rachit Gupta

    Director: Yash Chopra

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, Anupam Kher, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor

Words will not do justice to the swan song of a great filmmaker, but one has to try. So here it goes. Some people really know how to make a film. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) is Yash Chopra’s last film as director and it’s a film rich in philosophy, poetic love and honest emotions. Like any piece of commercial cinema, it has its cinematic liberties and plot holes. But the sum of it is an old school love story that weaves its magic on the tender hearts of die-hard romantics. The King of romance lives up to his epithet.

JTHJ is the love story of Samar Anand. And as fate puts it, he comes across two women who love him equally. The film starts off in London where Samar is a desi lad desperate to earn an honest living in a foreign land. He runs into the ravishing Mira who entrusts all her faith in Jesus. Samar helps Meera get over her pent up anxieties and in the process they fall in love. And just when you think the film’s running into the oh-we’ve-seen-that-before territory a twist separates the lovers. SRK’s forced to move to India where he runs into the boisterous Akira. Akira’s daredevil personality and spirit impresses Samar. But of course she’s alive and happening because she loves him.

Yes the structure of the story seems like a run-of-the-mill love triangle but there’s more to their dilemma than just the obvious. You don’t have melodramatic and unreal sacrifices or two women competing to woo their man. Instead you get a mature sense of camaraderie between the characters. And some master class writing where the same-old same-old “yadaash kho jaana” is crafted in the form of retrograde amnesia.

On the subject of writing, one of JTHJ’s commendable features is its real and uncomplicated dialogue. You don’t have characters being theatrical in expressing love. Instead they say it casually and in underplayed tones. And then there’s the core philosophy of faith and time that sets JTHJ apart from Bollywood’s regular fare of romances. The film says destiny and time can be the most important factors in a love saga.

That the actors look as beautiful as the exotic locations they’re in is a trademark feature of Yash Chopra’s films. JTHJ is no different. Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma steal the thunder from the landscapes of Kashmir, Ladakh and England. Shah Rukh Khan even in his grungy avatar as the army man lends to the authenticity of his part. (Save for a handful of amateurish make-up instances during the early London sequences).

But JTHJ is so much more than its flawless visual appeal. AR Rahman’s music and background score adds a touch of magic to the proceedings. It complements the actors’ performances perfectly. Shah Rukh Khan makes a stunning entry, he owns the screen space and he weaves his charisma into a net that holds JTHJ together. Especially effective are his scenes as the reserved army officer. Katrina Kaif is just a thing of beauty. That she looks stunning is a given, but she manages to give one of her career’s finest performances as Meera. Her underplay is the perfect contrast to Anushka’s lively and bubbly act. Anushka lightens JTHJ with energy, while Katrina anchors it with firm emotions.

At a gracious 3 hours runtime, JTHJ feels like an epic love story. And it is just that. JTHJ is the perfect adieu to a hallmark career. It is the best romantic film made in this generation.

    DHOOM:3 Release shifted to 2013

The much awaited release of DHOOM:3 has now been shifted to 2013. This has been necessitated because of various production and post-production considerations.

While the shoot begins from end-November 2011, we anticipate a demanding 10 to 11 months of intense shooting with concurrent post-production, which will stretch beyond. This will probably be cutting it too fine for a Christmas 2012 release.

In view of this and keeping the interest of the audience expectations from DHOOM:3, both Aditya Chopra and Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor) in consultation with Aamir, have decided to delay the release of the film to 2013.

Speaking about this, Victor said, “DHOOM:3 is very dear to all of us as well as to its audience who expect only the best from the franchise. While the shooting will finish in time, we expect the post-production to take much longer. We are trying our best to give one of the finest cinematic experiences to our discerning audience and therefore did not want to compromise the quality of the film just to meet the release date.”

Produced by Aditya Chopra, DHOOM:3 will be written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who has written DHOOM 1 & 2. He has also written and directed Tashan.

Both Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will continue in their now iconic roles of Jai Dixit and Ali.

Look forward to DHOOM:3 in 2013!

Dhoom 3: The Hunt for the Leading Lady is over!

After an extensive hunt for a new face for the leading lady for Dhoom:3, which included international aspirants as well, Yash Raj Films is now pleased to announce and confirm that Katrina Kaif will play this role.

The Director, Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor), along with Aditya Chopra, has made this choice after considerable deliberations. When asked on the selection process, Victor said: “After almost a year of searching for a new face for Dhoom:3, we were still unable to find the perfect debutant to play the lead role. We even reached out to international talent but were still unable to find someone who stood out. Both Adi and I really wanted to be sure that the person we chose would be perfect for the role. Once we decided to go with a known face and not pursue the new-comer route, Katrina was the obvious choice for all of us. She is someone who we all know will bring tremendous enthusiasm and commitment to the film. The first time pairing of Aamir with Katrina will also certainly add value.”

Produced by Aditya Chopra, Dhoom:3 is written and directed by Victor, who had also written Dhoom & Dhoom 2.

Apart from Aamir Khan, who plays the anti-hero in the film, both Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will continue in their now iconic roles of Jai Dixit and Ali.

The film will begin shooting end of this year and is slated for a 2012 Christmas release.
